My First Rag Quilt

In my quest to make as many of my gifts as I could for my friend for her Baby Shower I decided to take on the task of making a Rag Quilt. This was a pretty ambitious quest considering I had never made a Rag Quilt (or any kind of quilt) before in my life. However, after watching many tutorials on Youtube I became confident that I'd be able to handle the task.

Here is a real quick step by step of what I did. First off I found coordinating flannels that I wanted to use.

Then I cut the fabric to the size I wanted. I believe I had decided on 8x8inch squares.

Then I paired each pattern piece with a solid brown piece (as the back) and laied them out on the floor to figure out the pattern I wanted for the blanket.

Once I figured out the pattern I wanted, I pinned each row together (there is a trick to the pinning, I will post the youtube video that I watched at the end so you can hear what she had to say about that), and sewing together one row at a time.

After sewing the rows together, I then sewed them to each other to make it as one.

It took a while, but I snipped all the joining pieces by hand. I did purchase a pair of spring loaded scissors (this proved to be very helpful and it definitely saved my hand!!), and the process went rather smoothly.

Once it was snipped it had to be washed so the snips could fray and this is what it turned out to look like. Not bad for a first try, I'd love to do more, but definitely not when I'm on a time restriction.

Happy Craftin'!
